| What is Fair Trade? |
 |
|
 |
Fair Trade is defined by FINE as follows:
"Fair Trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers especially in the South. Fair Trade Organizations, backed by consumers, are engaged actively in supporting producers, awareness raising and in campaigning for changes in the rules and practice of conventional international trade. Fair Trade products are produced and traded in accordance with these principles wherever possible verified by credible, independent assurance systems."
Simply explained, Fair Trade allows talented artisans and underprivileged single mothers of impoverished communities to make a dignified living with fair wages. By working with certified organizations and importers, it helps to improve the standard of living, provide children the opportunity for education, and utilizes environmentally safe practices.
It is a cause that we support at Sassafras Moon World Gifts by offering many Fair Trade goods for purchase. We work with Fair Trade Federation members such as:
- Bright Hope International
- Cafe Campesino
- Costello International
- Global Crafts
- Handcrafting Justice
- MayaWorks
- Sanyork
- SERRV
These suppliers strive to ensure that the Fair Trade principles are upheld.
Fair Trade Principles
Fair Price
Democratically organized artisans and farmer groups receive a guaranteed minimum floor price and are paid as the products leave the village. Farmers receive an additional premium for certified organic products. This ensures that a fair amount goes to the people who created the wares, not the middleman.
Fair Labor Conditions
Workers enjoy freedom of association, safe working conditions, and living wages. Child labor is strictly prohibited.
Direct Trade
Importers purchase as directly as possible from producer groups, empowering farmers and artists to develop the business capacity necessary to compete in the global marketplace. Sassafras Moon World Gifts often purchases from small farmer and artisan villages who have banded together to market their items. When these boxes arrive from a faraway land it is an exciting day in our shop!
Democratic And Transparent Organizations
Fair Trade farmers and farm workers decide democratically how to invest revenues. Artisans often form cooperatives to make decisions about future projects, what products they will produce, and which needed equipment will be purchased.
Community Development
Workers invest in social and business development projects like scholarship programs, quality improvement training, and organic certification to help their community.
Environmental Sustainability
Agrochemicals are strictly prohibited in favor of environmentally sustainable farming methods that protect farmers' health and preserve valuable ecosystems for future generations. Artisans promise not to harm the environment in the production of their creations.
